About the course

Basic Financial Understanding for Cyber & IT Security Professionals is an intensive 4-hour course that provides participants with a solid and practical financial foundation. The course is designed for both specialists and managers who lack the basic financial insight in their work to understand the CFO's perspective and to become better at arguing for investments, preparing business cases and actually obtaining funding for their projects and initiatives.

Through hands-on exercises and concrete examples, participants learn how business economics, accounting, OPEX/CAPEX, depreciation, TCO and ROI work in practice, and how these concepts influence decisions about IT and security projects.

The course demystifies economics in an easy and practical way and enables participants to think and analyze as business does, so they are stronger in the dialogue about priorities, risks and investments.

Leave the course with

– A better understanding of the company's financial logic through accounting, balance sheet and cash flow

– The ability to assess how security measures affect the financial statements – both as a cost and as an investment

– The ability to distinguish between OPEX and CAPEX and understand depreciation in practice

– Exercise in calculating TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for a security initiative

– Understanding of ROI considerations such as cost avoidance, downtime, production stoppage, compliance and risk reduction

– Exercise in preparing an economic value analysis of a security project

– Training in preparing simple, convincing and economically sound structured assessments for use in business cases

Who is the course for?

The course is particularly relevant for professionals who:
